In early 2020, I embarked on a rather experimental project that became The Space Between. Little did I know how the concept of “the space between” would take on even more meaning as 2020 unfolded! This album was unique not just in sound but in its release format. Instead of dropping all at once, I decided to release The Space Between gradually, adding one new song on every full moon and new moon. So, over the course of several months, fans would get a new track or two every lunar cycle. 

Musically, The Space Between is a very introspective and cinematic album. I intentionally kept a lot of openness in these tracks. I think the album’s mood was also influenced by the solitude of 2020; I was spending a lot of time in nature and in my studio, reflecting on uncertainty and hope. One might notice that The Space Between is more of a solo endeavor than some of my other records. After the heavily collaborative Formless Edge and Anew, I almost needed to retreat into my own creative world for a bit – and this album is what emerged. That said, I wasn’t entirely alone: I continued my long-standing partnership with visionary artist Android Jones for the cover art (Android’s piece for this album is otherworldly – a perfect visual analog to the music’s ethereal quality). And I had the support of the community through the release process, as each song release came with interactions and feedback that inspired me for the next.

For me, it was a meditation on uncertainty and potential. In that uncertain year of 2020, it kept me grounded and creative, and I think it provided some solace and escape for listeners riding out that same storm.
